Searching for your first home should be fun and exciting…and it can be. Here are a few simple steps to help you get started.

Tips to Build your First Home

1. TYPE OF HOME: If you are in the market for a new home, you should decide on the type of home you want. Patio, condo, custom?

2. BUILDER: You should shop for your builder as carefully as you shop for your home.

Make a list of builders who build in your price range.
Check with the Central Minnesota Builders Association for a free list of professional licensed builders.
Check out the builders during the CMBA Tour of Homes.
Visit homes the builders built and talk to the owners.
Check out how long the builder has been in business.
Make sure the builder is licensed which is required in MN.
Ask if the builder belongs to a builders association.

3. LOCATION: Consider the location, what schools are in the area, shopping, places of interest.

5. CONTRACT & WARRANTY: Make sure your builder has a good contract that explains the warranty of the home.
